Why should we love our enemies? The first reason is fairly obvious. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction ... The chain reaction - of evil-hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars - must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.
... love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend. We never get rid of an enemy by meeting hate with hate; we get rid of an enemy by getting rid of enmity. By its very nature, hate destroys and tears down; by its very nature, love creates and builds up. Love transforms with redemptive power.

(The original) ten things about me:
1. I'm a relentless optimist.
2. Languages fascinate me and I enjoy learning new ones. I'm also interested in world affairs, transportation issues, and politics.
3. "The Simpsons"
4. I'm a vocabulary geek. (An extension of #2 above.) And yes, this thread attracts me like a moth to a flame. Can't help it.
5. I live in
6. My favorite band is Los Amigos Invisibles, a Venezuelan funk/dance/party band. They are not to be missed in a live show. It doesn't matter if you don't speak Spanish; you'll have a great time.
7. I am currently employed as a tool of globalization. The globalization part I am generally ok with; the tool part, not so much.
8. I forget what 8 was for...
9. My mom took lots of speed when she was pregnant with me, which is my excuse for just about everything.*
10. Life goes better once you've learned not to take most things personally.
*It was the sixties, the era of "better living through chemistry," and it's funny because she was, at the time, a very square, very straight-laced, church-going woman who was simply following her doctor's orders. She's lightened up a bit on the square and church-going part, but she's horrified now that she took amphetamines for seven months, knowing that she was pregnant. Heh.
Ten more things:
11.
12. Like genial, this was a hugely influential experience. Developed a travel bug, and have lived in France, Venezuela, Brazil, and Panama.
13. I noticed from this thread that I have something in common with
Tracicle.
14. I need to get a new job, but I need to figure out what I want to do with my life first. When I was eight I wanted to grow up to be either the first woman President or the Flying Nun. Neither one looks particularly appealing anymore.
15. My two favorite movies are "The Year of Living Dangerously" and "Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown." I'm generally a big fan of Pedro Almodovar, and once attended a movie festival in Brazil and watched all of his movies in one weekend.
16. For people who are into it, I'm a Gemini, Aries rising, moon in Libra, with Saturn on the ascendant. I have no idea whether that means anything or not. I waffle between resisting the idea that the time and place of one's birth could have any sort of impact on the direction of one's life, and being spooked by the uncanny insights people have when they read my chart.
17. My favorite things: fresh raspberries, sushi, that good tired almost but not quite achy feeling after a good workout, and getting a pedicure. Also, I *heart* my iMac and my iPod.
18. I was bitten by a snake as a child but never became afraid of snakes. Big hairy spiders give me the heebie-jeebies, as do televangelists.
19. I recently became certified for SCUBA diving and I'm completely hooked.
20. I read The Economist religiously. I don't always agree with it, but even when they are wrong, they make me think.
